Colorado Adds More Risk to Appeals

by Joe Monzon, Denver, April 2021

Under current law, when Colorado property owners appeal a valuation set by a county board of equalization, the State Board of Assessment Appeals may not increase the valuation. New legislation (House Bill 21-1083) removes this restriction.

The legislative analysis of the bill states property tax revenues will likely increase in some cases. It may also result in fewer appeals filed since owners may not want to risk having their property valuation increased even more due to an appeal.
