New Orleans Property Tax Hike Moves Forward

by Tony Klein, Houston, April 2014

A proposed constitutional amendment to raise special property taxes in New Orleans is making its way through the Louisiana Legislature.

House Bill 111 would raise $5.6 million a year for the New Orleans police and fire departments. An aide to New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu said the tax hike from 5 mills to 6 mills for each department would ensure police and fire protection is "at a level that we think is adequate."

For the bill to become law, it must win two-thirds approval from the Legislature, backing from the City Council, and ultimately a statewide vote on November 4.
